As the saying goes: all good things come to an end. Unfortunately, the same fate was reserved for the bbProtection project, even before it made it to its one-year anniversary. We have done our best to turn this project into a succesful, unbeatable system for protecting the people that use boards the way they are meant to be - without spam. But we could no longer find the time, manpower, and resources to keep this project alive. Closing was a last resort and we unfortunately exhausted the rest of our options without success.
But... why terminating the service completely?
Rather than letting it die a painful death, we have decided to pull the plug now the project still has a good reputation and, with hundreds of boards using the service, has proven to be a great initiative.
Please do not think that we were bought out, blackmailed or whatever by the people behind these spambots; the sole reasons for discontinuing this project are those mentioned in the previous paragraphs. We do realize what kind of an impact this will have on the boards that are using bbProtection, but continuing the service without actively maintaining it was not an option.
What happens next? The anti-spam service has been disabled as of now and your board will let any registration and post (this unfortunately includes spammers) through. We strongly recommend you to uninstall the bbProtection MOD; the instructions on how to do so can be found in .mod format
here. If you unfamiliar with following MOD instructions, you may contact the bbProtection development team leader (
Vic D'Elfant) through private messaging on phpbb.com. He will uninstall the MOD free of charge on a first come, first serve basis.
In case we ever choose to set up a similar service and if you would like to be notified of such event, we encourage you to subscribe to our designated mailing list. Simply send an empty email to bbprotection-revived-subscribe[at-sign]lists[dot]coronis[dot]nl to subscribe. The subscription confirmation emails will very likely end up in Hotmail's Junk folder - be warned.
We would like to thank all of you for your continuous support, and sincerely hope to see you again in the future. We are very sorry that it had to come to this, but we again thank everybody for their support and vote of confidence throughout the project. If you would like to have a chat with us, please feel free to join the #bbprot IRC channel on irc.freenode.net or contact one of us on www.phpbb.com.
